Chatuchak Market(JJ Market) is the biggest Weekend Market in Bangkok. It has variety of stalls and it would be nearly impossible for you to complete the whole market in one day.
But today I’m not going to talk about The Chatuchak Market, on second thought I would like to introduce a pop-up hispter-type night market which is just around 15 minutes walk from Chatuchak Weekend Market- ArtBoxBangkok.
ArtBox Night Market was first introduced in June 2015 and every time was held in a limited period. The previous one was from March 2016 to April 2016 (was supposed to be closed in June but it ended ahead the planned schedule due to the venue issue). This time, ArtBox Bangkok started on 30 September 2016 and will be ended on 30 April 2017, and as usual, only open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 12pm to 11pm.
We went there on the Christmas Eve, there were this Big Christmas Tree formed by the colorful light bulbs and many other eye catching light decorations.
The market is filled up by the giant shipping containers instead of using the traditional stall. To avoid making all containers just look like a bunch of dull white boxes, the artists have put a touch of magic on them by painting over the outside of the containers.
Besides the vendors selling clothes and accessories, the other side of the market is the food section. In ArtBox, they are not only selling Thai food, there are quite a few different fusions, for example: burgers, Italian grill and pizza.
The food overall is a bit pricey compared with other markets but they are in high quality and cooked with high grade ingredients.
In the ArtBox Market, It has a about 2-tennis-court size space for the Live Music performance. You can buy the food from the food section and look for a nice seat close to the stage and enjoy the food with the nice live music performance. They also have variety of beer and cocktail choices in the venue if you just want for a drink.
I haven’t been to many night markets in Thailand but in general they just give me the similar impression. But ArtBox Bangkok felt very different and was impressive. Yes, the market flow is not as much as others but it is good that you can have time and space to stop and look for the products and also get less bumping shoulders. The live music stage, artful decorations & ambiance, combined with great food & drinks combine to create a great vibe and make for a great place to spend a weekend night. I will definitely pay another visit before the end of April.
