Nimmanhaemin is one of the must-go areas for travelers in Chiang Mai. Not just because it consists of numerous modern hipster shops providing great photography backdrops and many decent cafés for you to spend a whole relaxing afternoon in, but there are also a variety of high quality budget-friendly (‘cheap’) restaurants. Here are my top 10 good value restaurants in the Nimman region.
1, MU’s KATSU
“Katsu” in Japanese means deep-fried cutlet. I would say this restaurant has made the best katsu in Nimman. A Tonkatsu set (Pork cutlet with rice and a bowl of miso soup) just costs THB 105 that’s why the restaurant is very popular, especially among the students. The food will be made upon the orders, so sometimes you have to wait for 30- 45 minutes for your food to arrive at the peak hours. The restaurant closes extremely early at around 7:30pm. It would be good for you if you plan to have an early dinner and I will recommend you NOT to go with a super hungry stomach (you can add some extra rice for 20 Baht if that’s the case).
Address: Nimmana Haeminda Road, Opposite Soi 13, Mueang Chiang Mai District
Hours: Monday, Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 7:30pm. Tuesday Closed.
Ninja is a Japanese Ramen restaurant but also has Sashimi, Don and Katsu dishes. The Ramens basically are serving the similar toppings but has come with 3 sizes and different soup-bases. For most women, the small size should be enough but medium size is perfect for a foodie girl like me. If 2 persons go for a meal in Ninja, 3 dishes will be a good amount to full up both person and just cost around THB 300 to 350.
Address: 3 Huaykaew Rd., Suthep Muang, Chiang Mai, 50200, Thailand (Also near the end of Soi 5)
Hours: Everyday 11am to 3pm, 6pm to 10pm (9:30pm last order)
3, Cherng Doi Grilled Chicken
Cherng Doi Grilled Chicken is a Thai restaurant. Their signature dish is the “Kai Yang Nang Krob” (Low Roasted Chicken with the Crispy Skin). The restaurant is a classic Thai-style restaurant, no A/C, semi-opened area, wooden tables, wooden chairs, warm yellowish lighting and many geckos on the wall. I ordered one main dish (Kai yang Nang Krob), one Green Papaya Salad (Som Tam Thai), one Sticky Rice and one Iced Thai Milk Tea, the total was just THB145! And the speed of the serving is very fast! So, contrary to MU’s Katsu, if you are very hungry, it is the place for you to order tons and they serve fast.
Address: Suk kasame Road(Soi 4), Mueang Chiang Mai District
Hours: Monday Closed. Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 10pm
4, Smiley Kitchen
There isn’t any fancy decoration, alternatively it is just very neat and tidy with the yellow walls. This is a Japanese restaurant and the owner is a friendly Japanese lady. A few pictures on the wall with the bright warm light bring this harmony atmosphere which make you feel like you are a guest in a Japanese family. I ordered the stir-pork with eggplant set, it came with a bowl of rice and a bowl of miso soup. The food was delicious and the amount of the food was good but the exciting part was it tasted so much like home cooking! I guess that’s why many Japanese like to hang out here because this place makes them feel like home. The whole set of meal just costed me THB 150 and they provided free iced water.
Address: Nimmana Haeminda Road Soi 3, Mueang Chiang Mai District
Hours: Monday to Saturday 11:30am to 3pm, 5:30pm to 9:30pm. Sunday Closed.
5, Salad Concept
The Salad Concept @ Tha Phae Gate
After a few days of spicy Thai food, maybe you would like to have something just green. Salad Concept is the right place for you. You can mix and match your own salad and they have a variety salad dressings for you to choose from. The salad portion is big and you will feel powered up after the meal. I would recommend the Chicken Caesar Salad Wrap. Basically, they just put the whole salad in a wrap instead of placing all vegetables on a plate. But it is handy for you to eat and the wrap holds all the dressing. This big Chicken Caesar Salad Wrap cost only THB 115.
Adress: Nimmana Haeminda Road Soi 13, Mueang Chiang Mai District (under renovation under the end of November 2016; There is another branch close to the north of the Tha Phae Gate (the East Gate))
6, Curry Scoop
They just have 9 options on the menu and, yes, all are served with Japanese curry. However, they all taste good. They price range is from THB 84 to THB 139. I had the curry rice with fried shrimp and I got a surprise coconut popsicle as a dessert at the end!
Address: Nimmana Haeminda Road Soi 13, Mueang Chiang Mai District
Hours: Monday to Sunday 11am to 3pm, 4:30pm to 8:30pm.
7, Anchan Vegetarian Restaurant
If you are a vegetarian, Anchan is the restaurant you are looking for in Nimman. It is the next door to MU’s Katsu and is on the second floor. They have a little terrace area for the customers to enjoy the street view while having their meal. Massaman Curry is my favorite dish there (one of the few places in Chiang Mai where you can find it) and you can order rice next to it which seems to be free, total is THB 120.
Address: Nimmana Haeminda Road, Opposite Soi 13, Mueang Chiang Mai District
Hours: Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 8:30pm. Sunday and Monday Closed.
Indian cuisine is one of the most popular cuisines in the world, and I have one to recommend to you one in the Nimman area. Accha is an outdoor restaurant surrounded by trees giving it a garden area feeling. You can enjoy the tasty Indian masala curry made by different herbs and spices in a nature environment. They have 3 large sets ranging from 200-260 THB which includes 2 curries, rice, and naan bread. There are only 4 tables that officially belong to Accha but they also “share” some tables from Starbucks which is just right next door. But it would be better for you to check the weather forecast before deciding to go to Accha.
Address: Nimmana Haeminda Road Soi 9, Mueang Chiang Mai District
Hours: Monday 4-10pm, Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 10pm.
9, Food 4 Thought
Food 4 Thought is not exactly in the Nimman area, it’s located behind the Maya Mall and around 15 to 20 mins walk along the Huay Kaew Road. It is a semi-opened area with many green plants over the wall and the roof. It has a nice semi-transparent roof top to prevent the bright sun light and rain but still provide the dim natural light to the restaurant. All food is made from scratch, they ensure the food is fresh and no chemicals added or preservative and supporting the local community by only using the local supplies. It seems that the biggest attraction of the restaurant is their healthy and fresh salad wraps and fruit based drinks but for me I have another reason which is they are supporting to reduce the global food waste by using the “ugly” products which can’t be sold on account of it being misshapen or discolored. I am so glad that there are some restaurants do not just concern about business but also the earth we are living in.
Address: 15/5 Moo 1, Soi Sudjai, Tanon Khlong Chonlapratarn, Tambon Chang Phuak, Amphoe Mueang Chiang Mai District
Hours: Sunday to Wednesday 8am to 5pm, Thursday to Saturday 8am to 10pm
10, Wrap Master
Delicious Burritos! Wrap Master is a “mobile restaurant” (alright, I am a bit cheating here). In another term, we call it a food truck. You can find it every night on the Nimman main street, usually between lane 4 and lane 6. It is just a small food truck around 3m x 2m, but in this limited space they can prepare the juicy and fully stuffed burritos and Tacos. Besides, they have a few seats on one side of the truck like a bar table. The filled burritos are priced between THB 80 to 119 depends on the main ingredients (no meat, eggs/chicken, pork or beef).
Cainito, Burmese Restaurant And Library, Zood Zood, Maya Shopping Mall Local Food Court
I hope my recommendations will please your stomach and help you save some Baht along the way!
